The pull was consistent, which actually made me feel better in a weird way, because consistent problems are almost always fixable problems. Common Causes Behind RC Car Steering Problems
Before grabbing tools, I ran through the usual suspects in my head, and honestly this mental checklist has saved me more than once.
Bent or Loose Steering Linkage
The steering linkage is the little rod connecting the servo to the wheels, and it takes a beating every time you clip a curb or land a jump slightly off. A bent linkage will pull the truck in one direction no matter how well you trim the transmitter. I popped the body off and eyeballed the rod first, since this is the fastest thing to check and the most common cause I have run into.
Worn Servo Horn or Servo Saver
If the linkage looked straight, the next stop is the servo horn and servo saver. These parts absorb impact so the actual gears inside the servo do not get destroyed. Over time they wear out, strip, or shift position slightly, which throws off the centering even though the servo itself is working perfectly fine.
Stripped Servo Gears
This one is less common but worth ruling out, especially if you hear a faint grinding or clicking sound when you turn the wheel by hand with the truck powered off. Stripped gears usually mean a full servo replacement, which is not fun, but at least it is a clear diagnosis instead of a mystery.
Misaligned Wheels or Toe Angle
Sometimes the steering system itself is completely fine and the wheels are just not aligned the way they should be. A slightly bent hub or an uneven toe angle will make a truck pull to one side even with perfect trim settings. This is easy to miss because everything looks symmetrical at a glance.
Debris Jammed in the Steering Assembly
If your truck has seen any rough terrain lately, do not skip this one. I learned this the hard way after a session that turned into a full muddy trail run a few weeks earlier. Packed dirt or small rocks lodged near the steering knuckle can restrict movement just enough to cause a pull, and it will not show up unless you actually flex the steering arm by hand.

How I Actually Fixed It
Turned out my issue was a combination of two things, a slightly loose servo horn screw and a bit of dried mud wedged near the steering knuckle from that same muddy outing. Neither one alone would have caused this much drift, but together they added up.
Tools I Used
Nothing fancy here. A small Phillips screwdriver, a hex driver set for the linkage screws, an old toothbrush for cleaning out debris, and a bit of light machine oil for the steering knuckle once it was clean. Total cost was basically zero since I already had everything on hand.
Cleaning, Tightening, and Testing the Fix
I removed the front wheels, brushed out every bit of caked dirt around the knuckle, tightened the servo horn screw to spec, and manually centered the steering before powering the truck back on. This step matters more than people think. If the servo is powered on before the linkage is properly centered, you can end up fighting the electronics instead of the actual mechanical problem.
Testing in the Backyard
My daughter reclaimed her judge’s chair for round two. Straight throttle, no drift, no correction needed. She gave it a solid nod of approval, which in her scoring system is basically a gold medal.

Keeping the Steering Tight Long Term
Fixing the problem once is good, but preventing it from coming back is better. Since that Saturday, I have made a habit of checking the steering linkage and knuckle area after any session on dirt, gravel, or mud, not just when something feels off.
