In reality, four things matter much more.
Battery Life Matters More Than Top Speed
The first thing I check is battery life.
A boat that runs for 18 minutes is usually more enjoyable than a slightly faster boat that quits after 8 minutes.
My opinion hasn’t changed on this.
Extra run time means less charging and more actual fun.
Self-Righting Is Worth Paying For
The first time one of my boats flipped upside down in the middle of a lake, I immediately understood why self-righting technology exists.
Without it, you’re either swimming or finding a very creative way to retrieve your boat.
Most of the better RC boats under $200 now include this feature, and I genuinely think it’s worth having.
Durability Saves Money
I learned this lesson the hard way.
A cheap hull that cracks after a minor collision ends up costing more than a slightly better boat from the beginning.
Good ABS construction and decent waterproofing make a huge difference.

A boat that feels incredibly fast on smooth water can become difficult to control once the surface gets rough.
I also agree with many experienced hobbyists who recommend early morning runs. Less wind usually means better performance and longer run times.
Common Beginner Mistakes
The biggest mistake I see is buying based entirely on speed.
Speed is fun.
But speed without control gets old very quickly.
Another mistake is ignoring replacement parts availability.
Sooner or later, you’ll need a propeller, battery, or spare hardware.
Having access to replacement parts makes ownership much easier.
If someone asked me today what the best RC boat under $200 is, I wouldn’t automatically choose the fastest model.
I’d choose the one that balances speed, battery life, reliability, and durability.
After spending plenty of weekends on the water, I’ve realized that’s what actually creates a great RC boating experience.
In my opinion, the under-$200 category is currently the sweet spot for most hobbyists. You get enough performance to have fun, enough quality to avoid constant repairs, and enough value to feel like you spent your money wisely.
